Stillaguamish Valley Learning Center kindergartners receive library cards to expand reading skills

Stillaguamish Valley Learning Center (SVLC) kindergartners took a walking field trip to the nearby Arlington Library on Dec. 13 so they could receive library cards and check out books. For many of the students, this was their first visit to the library.

Arlington Children’s Librarian, Lesla Wolf, said it was great to have children visit the library. The kindergartners looked for books in the Children’s section before they went up to the counter to receive their cards and check out their selected books.

“When children enjoy reading for fun, it builds a love of language and reading,” said Wolf. “The ages from birth to third grade are critical for school success later in life.”

“Reading is so critical for students at this age,” said SVLC Kindergarten Teacher, Erin Green. “During parent/teacher conferences, I encourage families to read with their kindergartner for 20 minutes each night.”

Kindergartner, Emily Powers, received her library card and was going to share what she reads about in her book with her classmates.

“I’m very excited to have my own library card so I can check out books,” said Powers. “I’m learning how to read by myself.”
